The extraction system is connected to a dedicated fugitive air cleaning bag filter, which cleans the fumes prior to exhausting to the atmosphere. Our fume extraction systems ensure that environmental standards are met and give peace of mind to our clients.

Metalloys Secondary Fume Ectraction

Tenova Pyromet supplied a tapping and casting fume control system featuring localised extraction hoods and a bag filter plant for furnaces M1 to M4 (South Plant) and M10 and M11 (North Plant) at BHP Billiton’s Metalloys Silicon Manganese and Ferro Manganese Plants in Meyerton, South Africa.
The North plant project was a turnkey contract for the supply, design, manufacture installation and commissioning of the fume extraction system; the South Plant contract included supply of detailed engineering and equipment, complete with supervision of the erection and commissioning phases. PLC and SCADA programming for both projects were performed by Metalloys based on Tenova's functional specifications. Common Features: The complete plant was an in-house Tenova Pyromet design.
Isolating dampers were installed at each suction point to optimise suction and also to reduce the overall capacity of the plants. The damper operations were automatically switched by the control program with the selection of a specific tapping configuration by the plant operator from the SCADA system. South Plant Features: Dust and fume control for each furnace was done at the metal and slag tap holes, launders and casting machine. Polyester needle-felt with PTFE membrane material was selected as the filter material and the bag filter was sized to operate at 1.28 m/min air to cloth ratio. Extraction provided by three centrifugal fans, each with a 450 kW motor, ensuring at least a 66 % (at a reduced suction) availability in the event of fan maintenance.

Polyester needle-felt material with anti static proper ties was selected as the filter material and the bag filter was sized to operate at 1.28 m/min air to cloth ratio. Extraction provided by two centrifugal fans, each with 450 kW motor, ensuring at least a 50% (at a reduced suction) availability in the event of fan maintenace.
